A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Or, an armored car Azure. Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Gold scroll inscribed AUDACIA CUM PRUDENTIA in Black letters.
Yellow is the color of the Cavalry arm and the armored car refers to the operations of the Battalion. The motto translates to Daring With Judgment.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 82d Reconnaissance Battalion on 17 January 1942. It was redesignated for the 82d Armored Reconnaissance Battalion on 23 February 1942. The insignia was redesignated for the 82d Reconnaissance Battalion on 30 September 1949. It was cancelled when a new design was approved on 30 November 1954.
